2019 UW ScanDesign Studio in collaboration with Effekt Architects
Folkehøgskole is a student and faculty housing project designed as a part of Folk High School master development plan in the city of Hvalsø, Denmark. As a part of the green transition, the project seeks to create architecture that develops one’s relationship with nature, their peers and with oneself.
The housing structures are organized on the outermost ring of the campus plan to integrate the dwelling spaces into the seasonal gardens and farms beyond the site. The project incorporates the concept of co-housing between the students and faculty members to create intentional communities, encourage relationships, participation, and shared values between the different inhabitants. Four structures are organized in a cluster to create a shared courtyard between users. The housing is arranged so that two separate housing structures share living and kitchen spaces. The natural environment is extended into the interiors with a small garden inserted into central circulation stair. Living and sleeping spaces connect to the outside and are oriented towards the sky, the seasonal gardens and the landscape beyond.
